A graduate in History of Art, French and Italian from Cambridge University, after training at Christie's in London, I became Head of Old Master Pictures in Paris, leading sales in Monaco in the mid-1990s. I returned in 1996 to head the London Department for over ten years. In this time, I led the auction sale of Old Master Pictures in December 2000, which realised a total of £56.7 million, then the highest for a sale in this category. In 2004, I led the private treaty sale of Duccio’s Stoclet Madonna to the Metropolitan Museum of Art New York, for a record sum, which was at the time the highest price ever paid by the Met for any purchase, the highest price paid for an Old Master privately and the most expensive Old Master ever sold by Christie's. I oversaw the Old Master auction in December 2009, which realised £68.4 million, establishing a new highest total for a sale in the category and setting artist records for Rembrandt, Raphael and Domenichino.
In July 2016, I was responsible for the rediscovery and sale of Rubens’s masterly Lot and his Daughters (now on loan to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York) sold for £44.9 million, at the time the record price for any old master painting sold at auction at Christie’s.
I was appointed Deputy Chairman of Christie's Old Masters in 2012, International Co-Chairman in 2016 and International Head of Private Sales in 2017.
I advise collectors and institutions in Europe, North and South America, South Africa, the Middle East and Asia, and have given lectures across Europe, China, Hong Kong and Taipei.
